This has raised questions in regards to Kisii University recently admitted 4000 freshmen for their September intake. The 4000 first years that includes both self-sponsored and regular students.
Kisii University having been founded in 2013, the higher learning institution has had a firsthand experience in tremendous growth. And as part of its development and expansion, the university has campuses in Nairobi and four more in other towns in Kenya.
The institution offers degrees in law, pure and applied sciences, health sciences, business management, engineering, ICT, agriculture among others.
However, the school is facing a number of challenges. One major one being accommodation. The school is having problems accommodating the large growing number of students every intake. As a result of the unproportional ratio of students to the hostels available.
At the beginning of the year, the Commission for University Education (CUE) headed by Henry Thairu questioned 5 students who were awarded Doctorate of Philosophy from Kisii University in December 2014. The conflict between the Commission and the university was the accreditation and quality of Kisii University, since the 5 did not reach the threshold.
The higher leaning institution was also accused of not abiding by the rules and regulations that guide the establishments of campuses. According an article in the Daily Nation, the commission will audit the education systems of Kisii University, to enable the promotion and preservation of quality tertiary education.
The move by the university to admit 4000 first years is a first one from this varsity. This could be a move to bring Kisii University positive publicity and positive change. According to a student from Kisii University, he claims that the university is one of the best local universities in the country, since it provides both quality educations at a very affordable tuition fees, and this is motivational.
