Mathai Njama is an upcoming artist based in Nairobi who describes his style as alternative music. He gave an outstanding performance during this month’s PikNik event which took place this past Saturday.
You describe your music as alternative music, what do you mean by that?
My music borrows different aspects from Blues, Soul, Rhumba and rock & roll and that’s why I refer to it as alternative music.
So can we safely say your genre of music is different from the rest?
Yes. My music is like a child of the other genres.
How has your genre of music been received so far?
So far the reception has been positive and many people who have attended my performances tell me they enjoy my style in all the gigs I have played.
Why did you opt for something different?
To me it was like the best way express what I felt inside of me.
How long have you been in the industry?
Not that long, around six months after I graduated from Sauti Academy.
How is the experience so far?
It has been a good experience except for a few challenges here and there.
Can you share with us some of those challenges?
Let’s say for example I had to change certain aspects of my life in order to make it work for me.
I had to stop procrastinating and I also had to limit on how much I’m spending in order to save some of the cash so I can be able to support my music.
I had to overcome my personality because I’m a super introvert.
What can you tell other upcoming artists like you?
Be hungry, don’t wait for a good. Go looking for it.
Have you recorded any songs so far?
Not yet but I’m working on it hopefully by next month I will have recorded and released some.
