Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has told beIN sports that contract talks with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil are on hold until the summer, with Arsenal yet to reach an agreement over extending their deals. The Chilean forward (Sanchez) and German midfielder (Ozil), both 28, have just over a year left on their deals. Wenger says he has made up his mind about his own future, but is yet to sign the two-year extension on offer.
“At the moment we have not got an agreement,” said Wenger when asked about the future of Sanchez.
“We have decided to focus on the end of the season and talk about it during in the summer.
“Once you don’t get an agreement and that lasts it’s not good, so it’s better you sit down during the summer.”
Wenger’s own future is also uncertain as his contract expires after the current campaign, but the Frenchman said he had “no news” about his plans.
“No matter how long I stay I will be committed and completely focused. How long I stay doesn’t really matter because as long as I’m there I’m completely focused on achieving the best with the club,” he added.
The Gunners are however determined to secure the futures of their star players this summer, although reports indicate that the players are demanding salaries in excess of £250,000-a-week. Both players have shown remarkable form this season, despite Ozil struggling to maintain consistency following a series of injuries and illnesses through the season. Alexis is currently Arsenal’s top scorer in all competitions, with 22 goals and 15 assists in 37 games this season.
Arsenal have slipped to sixth in the Premier League following four defeats in their past five games. They get to face off with Manchester city when they play host on Sunday, 2nd April, for the Premier League.
