Are You Next? Al Shabaab Now Recruiting University Students In Kenya

(Last Updated On: June 30, 2015)

The attack on Garissa University that left 148 people dead was led by Mohammed Abdirahim Abdullahi, a former Nairobi University law student. This was an indicator of an active terrorist recruitment that targets intelligent brains at the Kenyan colleges and universities.

Kenya’s intelligence sources now indicate that some University students are paid members of ISIS and al Shabaab. The students are on the payroll at the Somalia base, in Iraq and others in Syria. These are young people who have agreed to join the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and Al Qaeda branch Harakat Al Shabaab Al Mujahideen (HSM).
NCTC Director Isaac Ochieng’ told a university audience yesterday that he has”evidence some students are on the payroll” of the two terror groups in Nairobi and elsewhere.

He surprised the congregation including Interior PS Monica Juma and Vice Chancellor Peter Mbithi, when he said ISIS is actively recruiting Kenyans on Universities and colleges.

Intelligence sources reveals that there is a very serious rebirth of homegrown terrorism aimed at establishing an East African Islamic Caliphate by al Qaeda and al Shabaab. Due to this, there is increased recruitment, training and indoctrination of the youth into terrorism cells.

Earlier, the sources had revealed a possibility of active recruitment and operational cells by the terror group in the country, owing to: The porous Kenya- Somali border and Un-monitored internet connections.
