Student elections are often the cause of chaos in university as seen in Chuka University, Tharaka- Nithi County. Riots began when one of the aspirants, Mr. Kennedy Waringa went to the university’s tribunal to contest the outcome of the elections which were held on 29th January 2016. After what seemed like a smooth process, Mr. Waringa felt that the elections lacked transparency and fairness.
Students raided shops at a market near the school as well as torched their school bus. Anti-riot police sought to settle the matter by arresting about 15 students who were involved.
The Vice Chancellor, Erastus Njoka shied from giving comments but mentioned that the school was closed until further notice.
Following the students’ unrest and disturbances the University has been closed until further notice.
