Recently, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s chart topping single ‘Despacito’ broke Psy’s Gangnam Style’s record for most YouTube views on a music video on the 3rd of August this year. On the same day, it earned 3 billion views making it the first ever music video to reach such a high amount of YouTube views and in such a short period of time.
The Justin Bieber-less version of the hit was first posted in January this year. It’s not often that songs in Spanish experience so much success.
‘Macarena’ spent 14 weeks at the No. 1 spot on the billboard charts back in the 90’s and is the last Spanish language song to have seen a lot of worldwide fame.
For nearly 20 years, Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men have held the record for the longest-leading Hot 100 No. 1 lasting sixteen weeks.
Both dominated the charts during the peak of their careers, the 1990s. Seven other songs share second place of 14 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 including one other Mariah Carey song and two other Boyz II Men songs. The major success of Despacito has Mariah Carey fans scared that it will overtake Mariah Carey’s record and take the number one spot as the single that has spent the most time at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
So far, Despacito has spent 15 weeks at No. 1 leaving Mariah fans, ‘little lambs’, afraid that the incomparable vocalist’s crown will be snatched. They have even encouraged people to stop listening and streaming the song since it’s unfair that in this day and age, sales include streams whereas in the past, only pure sales were counted. Haters have also criticized people for making this song so popular claiming that if it wans’t for Justin Bieber getting on the remix, the song would probably not have crossed over and gotten the world’s attention. Some have said that the song sounds just like every other Reggaeton song and that is nothing special but then again, there are many different factors that contribute to a song’s success.
