We’ll take our money, and we’ll take it in paper form only, please.

On the eve of Ghana’s crucial encounter with Portugal, and with a trip to the knockout stages of the World Cup potentially at stake, members of the Black Stars were involved in a money spat with the Ghana FA.

Apparently, the Ghanaian players had yet to be paid their appearance fees. They were unhappy not only with the lack of payment but also with the means in which it was to be delivered, and they were considering a boycott.

Per Ghana’s Deputy Sports Minister, Joseph Yaminvia BBC Sport: “The players insisted that they will want physical cash. Government had to mobilise the money and a chartered flight to Brazil. The money is in excess of $3 million (£1.8 million).”

Ghanaian President John Dramani assured the disgruntled players that they’d be paid, and the Ghanaian FA released a statement: “The government is pre-financing the payment of the Black Stars appearance fees which will be reimbursed when FIFA’s prize money for Ghana’s participation in the World Cup is paid after the tournament in Brazil.”

So, there you have it. If Ghana are to miraculously win the World Cup, the fans will have a chartered plane full of cash to thank for resurrecting their run.
