There are so many things the Jubilee government seems to get wrong. It’s corruption scandals, formation and disbanding of commissions, unfulfilled party promises (laptops), security propaganda…the list is endless. If we were to sit down and count the failures of the current government we’d never finish. That’s of course if it’s failure at all. Politics is too dirty a game for me to keep up with. So I’ll tell you of one good thing this Uhuru – Ruto government has done.

The Huduma Center, a government initiative aimed at improving and hastening delivery of services to the public has won a United Nations’ award.

The first center was launched in 2013 and is located on the ground floor of Teleposta Towers and has proved to be the best thing that ever happened to government public service. Huduma Centre was created solely to offer up to 41 services including issuance of birth certificate, certificate of good conduct, clearance certificate and issuance of passports, among others, making it a “one stop shop” for services.

Huduma Center Service was rated the overall winner in Improving the Delivery of Public Services category. Closely followed by Ethiopia’s Integrated Housing and Development Programme (IHDP) in the United Nations Public Service Awards (UNPSA).

The President, Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta commended Huduma Center Team saying,

“I am glad that the Huduma Programme is already proving to be a showcase in efficient and effective public service delivery in Africa and beyond.”

As a Kenyan I’m entitled to give my opinion too;

”Huduma Center is the best thing that ever happened to Public Service. I never thought I’d go to a public office and queue without thinking someone will pass you or someone else with friends will jump the queue. The computer ticket system is the best.”

I remember the first time I took my grandmother to do renew her NHIF cover, she was elated that it’s as fast. She went on and on to all her friends, ”…in all my 60 years of life I’ve never been to such a good and organized public office. Have you ever been to Huduma Center. It’s…” Of course all that in mother tongue. I’m sure having imagined that in mother tongue you have a rough idea of how satisfied she was with the service.
There are 12 operational centers across the counties with 12 others expected to be launched in the coming months.

The centre has also won the coveted African Association of Public Administration and Management Gold Medal Award in Innovation Management. The winners will be awarded on June 23, in Medellin, Colombia.

Mr. President, seems not all you’re working on is falling apart. Don’t lose hope, just work towards your vision.
