Kenyan marathoner Hyvon Ng’etich crawled 50m to the finish line after her body broke down. Ngetich who was leading the elite women first 23 miles of the Austin marathon before her body collapsed, ended up finishing in third place with a time of 3 hrs 4 mins.
Race volunteers offered her a wheelchair which she refused in a show of sheer determination, courage and zeal.
Ng’etich who doesn’t remember any of the events that took place within the final 2 kilometers, says she owes her victory to God. She also states that once you begin running, you should always keep going even if you have to die running, a mantra she clearly heeds to. Race director, John Conley was so impressed that he awarded her double the price money she won.
Another Kenyan, Cynthia Jerop finished first but it is Ngetich’s determination that made the headlines internationally.
