Wayne Rooney has had a phenomenal career since he joined Manchester United as an 18 year old from Everton commanding a transfer fee of 27 million pounds. He rose to become an integral part of the Manchester United squad and he acts as the skipper right now. Recently though he has been in and out of current manager Jose Mourinho’s squad starting only three times since December last year.

Lack of game time has prompted his agent Paul Stretford to travel to China to broker a deal for the 31 year old skipper. The Chinese Super League transfer window does not close until the 28th of this month and the agent is hoping to get a deal for Wayne Rooney. There were reports by BBC Sport that he could join Beijing Guoan but the club denied the offer after there were restrictions on them on the number of foreign players a club should have.

Competition for spots in the team has been high since the arrival of Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Borussia Dortmund in the summer. The Armenian has been a revelation in Jose Mourinho’s team after failing to impress in the Manchester derby back in September last year. Rooney was not included in the squad that won 1-0 at Saint-Etienne last night in the Europa league. Mkhitaryan who scored the only goal of the game limped off with what appeared to be an injury and was replaced by Marcus Rashford. Michael Carrick also got injured later on.

The latest injury development might just delay Rooney’s departure from United who have an EFL cup final against Southampton on Sunday. Speaking for Manchester United TV last night Mourinho said that Carrick and Mkhitaryan were doubtful for the cup final on Sunday. This situation might open up a spot for Wayne Rooney but it is only for the short term.

Wayne Rooney, whose contract is set to expire in 2019, is United’s record goal scorer after surpassing club legend Sir Bobby Charlton. He is also 7 caps away from becoming England’s most capped player. Leaving for China might undermine his chances of being the most capped player in England and that is why he has remainde mum on the transfer issue. Jose Mourinho also insists that Rooney is a wonderful player and a club legend and the decision lies with the player.

Most Manchester United fans would like him to stay but the lack of game time might prompt Rooney to leave the club. The Chinese Super League might be his destination due to his vow not to play for any other English team except Manchester United and Everton. His departure might be delayed but it is game over for Wayne Rooney at Manchester United.
