CRS International, a market and social research firm, recently carried out research on Kenyan universities whose results came out titled Kenyan Universities Sports Ranking 2016 whose objective was to establish the status of sports activities in Kenyan universities. It was also in an attempt to shape students character and curve a better career from sports by increasing completion and assuring quality as well as improving the student’s mental development.

Target Audience

The study targeted 55 accredited universities in Kenya during the first half of the year 2016. Other target audience was Kenya University Sports Association (KUSA), best high school sports wigs and select referees and coaches in the Kenyan sports industry.



Kenyan universities academic calendars do not synchronize well with the sports calendar or schedule of such activities. The study also indicated that most private universities go the extra mile of offering sports scholarships unlike public universities.

Within the region, Nyanza and Western province have zilch swimming facilities. Nyanza’s Kisumu County hosts the highest number of varsities. It is also considered to have the highest temperature and humidity count ranges 83 degrees F and 48% respectively.

The research also indicates that most universities do not have sports facilities and that has led to low participation. It recommends the government to increase funding of sports as well as teaching of sports related courses in all universities. It also urged learning institutions to promote participation into sports for a healthier generic well being.



The event was launched at Nairobi’s Intercontinental hotel amidst guest from various varsity sports department and delegated invites.

Kenyatta University emerged top followed by the University of Nairobi and United States International University Africa (USIU) in a hot suite. Mt. Kenya University (MKU) came in 3rd and Strathmore University consequently secured the fifth position.
