Much has changed in the last three years that the University has been in existence. Art has begun taking root as a great part of the students’ fraternity.

Audience at the show

Open mic is one session that has improved the talents of students in this institution and led to some getting recognition on social media, radio and in other Universities. The Open mic show was started way back in 2014 and took less time to become a popular event in the University. The idea behind the start of the show was to expose students to music, dance, poetry and deejay mixing. The show is basically run by the students and the equipment used is solely sponsored by them.

The entertainment docket at the University is still struggling because they can’t convince the administration to fund invitations of popular artists in Kenya. According to the recent host of the show Calvin Otieno, the University has little concern for entertainment. Since the show was started by a former student by the name Akeda Mjumbe two years ago, it has gone on to produce artists like Prince Jaymah, Cjush The Seeker, 5 O’ clock band and Diaz just to name a few.

Cjush The Seeker

Prince Jaymah has recorded more than ten songs at the moment and his hit song Milele has got airplay on Radio Maisha and Citizen radio. Cjush The Seeker who is also a spoken word artist now has a recording deal with DuduBaya records in Kitengela Nairobi. The Open mic has also produced DJs like ZJ Selah and Tanzsh who have graced almost all events happening in Laikipia University.

The show is bound to continue in the coming years due to the vibrant audience that flock the School’s Annex hall every Thursday evening from 7pm till late. It’s none restriction policy has also enabled students to showcase their talents without worrying about subscription fees.
