A Ugandan academic, Dr. Stella Nyanzi who once called President Yoweri Museveni a “pair of buttocks” has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.
She attended Friday’s sentencing via video link, against her will, and exposed her breasts in protest.
She was acquitted on a second charge, of “offensive communication”.
Seven people who were arrested on Friday during the sentencing of Makerere University Researcher Dr. Stella Nyanzi have been arraigned before Buganda road court grade one magistrate Stella Maris Amabilisi and charged with assaulting grade one magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu.
Prosecution states that the alleged group and others still at large on the 2nd of August 2019 at Buganda Road Court incited court audience to do an act of violence against the magistrate
They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge of incitement of violence.
Uganda has a poor record on freedom of expression according to Reporters Without Borders, which says President Museveni “tolerates no criticism”.
Earlier this year, Ugandan authorities detained BBC journalists who were investigating the illegal sale of government drugs.
