Maseno University was yesterday closed indefinitely due to the death of 2 students who sparked riots and mayhem in the campus. The students succumbed to injuries after a confrontation between the police and the students. This came only two weeks after another death of a student who was linked to students elections that had been planned the previous week. As of yesterday, three students were admitted in hospitals and others treated and discharged.
The confrontation reportedly started on Monday evening when students congregated at the main campus for the ‘Big Debate’ ahead of the student union elections, which were set for today and Friday, they blamed the police for interfering in what they claim to be a peaceful campaign.
Last week a fire burnt down the administration block, destroying crucial records. read full story HERE. as of yesterday the Kisumu–Busia road was blocked for the better part of the morning. a memo was sent to the school, signed by the acting Vice Chancellor Catherine Muhoma explaining the reason why the school had to be closed and that the students had to vacate the premises with immediate effect. They were given 30 minutes to pack and leave.
The students blamed the institution of interfering with the campaign as they barred some students from contesting and placing their own puppets.This raised a lot of tension prior to the election date.
