Students at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology(MMUST) in Kakamega county have been on rampage for the past 3 days over following an increment in tuition fees. The protests have led to an interruption in academic activities, necessitating the school administration to halt academic programs for undergraduate students indefinitely.
The students were advised to vacate the school premises today (October 6th,2016) morning through an internal memo signed by the university’s acting registrar, C.K. Onyancha.
“It has been noted that the disruption of normal running of the university had persisted, students and lecturers have been ejected from lecture rooms for a third day and some university property has been destroyed by some groups of students. This goes against the university rules and regulations governing student discipline. The university senate has resolved to close the university to all undergraduate students in the main campus,”
Said Dr Onyancha. The secretary general of Masinde Muliro University Students Organisation, David Kemboi ,however, wondered why the university had to be closed over issues that could be solved through dialogue between the college administration and students.
We hope the situation is resolved soon.
