Tiwa Savage was in the country over the weekend for a performance at this year’s edition of the BBQ Live concert. If you missed the concert, then you missed out on a whole lot of fun and entertainment!
The African superstar brought the house down with a breathtaking performances backed with her dancers and DJ.
VarCity caught up to her prior to the show and learnt a few things about the singing beauty in the process.
The Bible keeps her grounded.
For a superstar of her caliber, one would expect that Tiwa would be so full of herself from the fame. She is however, very humble and an interesting person to talk to. Tiwa attributes her humble nature to her upbringing in the Church and her parents who are very spiritual.
“I’ve read about the rise and fall of Kings in the Bible ’cause of pride. I love my shoes, clothes and all that God has blessed me with, I don’t wanna lose all that ’cause of pride.”
She has 2 college degrees.
Tiwa doesn’t think school is everything, but she does believe in a good education. She wouldn’t want her son missing out on a good education, regardless of whatever path he would want to choose in life. Miss Savage has two college degrees to her name herself; one in Business Administration from the University of Kent and the other from the prestigious music school, Berklee. Beauty and brains!
God is the only King.
When asked about what she feels about talks of Yemi Alade taking over the title of Queen of African music she said,
“I think there’s only one throne and it’s sat on by the one and only God.”
Seems like a safe answer.
Collaboration with Kenyan artists.
According to Tiwa, there’s a lot of talent in the +254 and she is definitely looking to work with some of our local artists. She currently has Sauti Sol on her mind and is looking forward to work with the group sometime in the near future. Now that’s gonna be something!
Tiwa Savage engages in charity work across the continent and beyond. She might not sing about the issues affecting people especially the girl child, but her music has opened up venues and created a platform for her to make a difference. She gives talks to Universities and schools, visits victims of human trafficking in South Africa and is even involved in youth empowerment and breast cancer screening projects; among other initiatives.
On her time off.
Tiwa likes to go to the spa to relax and also spend quality time with her son Jam-jam. It’s evident how much she loves her son from the jumpsuit she had on with her son’s name in the front.
