#MeetThePlug: Upcoming Afro-pop Artist Aneya

Aneya is an upcoming Kenyan afro pop and afro funk artist based in Nairobi.

Let’s start with your stage name, what’s your stage name?

My stage name is Aneya which means Grace; it was actually my mum’s name.

Tell us something about Aneya?

Aneya is fun loving, diverse and family oriented besides being in love with music.

What genre of music do you do?

I do afro pop and afro funk.

Afro funk sounds interesting, tell us something about that?

Afro funk is basically a mixture of a bit of afro pop jazz and funk.

Why did you opt for the two genres?

I felt like I get to express myself and tell stories about not only my life but that of others as well.

When did join the music industry?

I joined the music industry after completing high school in the year 2016.

What inspired your entry into the music industry?

I have always been an avid listener of music from a young age since my parents were artists themselves. I feel like they paved the way for me to get into the industry because they inspire me.

So have you released any songs yet?

I haven’t released any songs yet. I was somehow waiting for the right time which I believe is actually now.

No recorded songs yet?

The songs are already recorded, just waiting to be released.

What are some of the challenges you have faced far?

I would say being looked down for various unreasonable reasons. There was a time I was denied the chance to play at certain gig because of my petite size.

Sometimes people may not take you serious as an artist and you have to work twice if you are a female artist which I think is a challenge many female artists undergo.

How do you go about such challenges?

I realized I’m not doing what I do to please anyone but rather doing what I believe is good music that should be shared with those who want to listen and appreciate, at the end of the day you can’t please everyone.

Artists you look up-to?

Yes, quite a number. I look up-to Beyonce, Lira, Waje, Phy, Suzziah and many more.

Any artists you would love to work with in the future?

I would love to work with Sy, Suzziah and Phy. I like their style of music and I have always felt like we would create something amazing together.

What would you tell other upcoming artists?

They should work hard, invest in their crafts and always keep in mind nothing comes easily.

Where can people find you on social media?

Where can people find your music?

For now my music is only available on soudcloud.

Any final remarks?

Pray and trust in the process because with God anything and everything is pretty much possible.
