Wapendwa Mziki is a fast rising urban gospel duo based in Nairobi made up of a female artist (Ninah) and a male artist as well (Mesh).
Tells us about Wapendwa muziki?
Wapendwa muziki is a gospel music group made up of two artists; Ninah and Mesh.
How did you guys meet/come together?
We met in a church and coincidentally we were supposed to perform something together. Our chemistry on stage was just amazing yet we hadn’t even practiced. We later on met and decided to start working as a group and as they say the rest is history.
The name Wapendwa Muziki, how did it come about?
When we were recording our first song together as a duo, the producer was curious and asked us what our name was and we didn’t have any idea at the time. So we started hunting and praying to God to give us ideas and Mesh managed to come up with the name which after having a discussion we ended up settling for.
What inspired your entry into the music industry?
In Psalms 40:3 the bible says he put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him. We therefore believe we have a mandate to reach out to souls through music telling of Gods wonderful works.
What’s your style of music?
We do urban gospel.
What made you guys settle for that particular genre?
We believe we have been called by God to bring souls to Christ through our gift of music and there is no other that fits more gospel, we were born to do it.
How long have you guys been in this industry?
We have been doing gospel music for quite some time now though we had to take a break because of our studies so officially we can say like a year that’s from last year July.
So how many songs have you been able to put out so far?
We have released three songs so far that’s “Amazing love”, “Shula” and “One Day”.
How has the industry been for you guys so far?
It’s been amazing. At first it was kind of tough and confusing especially with the fact that we didn’t really know much about the industry and we didn’t know anyone as well but God has been good to us.
We have been able to create a few connections and our mentor Guardian Angel has always held our hands and he is been molding us.
What are some of the challenges you have gone through so far?
So far we would say financial challenges.
How do you go about it?
We have just had to work hard and trust in God that one day everything will work out.
How has it been for you guys working as a group?
It’s been so much fun. We challenge each other, correct each other, encourage each other and pray together as we grow together. They say two heads are better than one.
Do you ever go through fights?
At first we used to fight a lot. It was a foundation building process. Nowadays there is order and unity.
We have seen other music groups like Christ Cycles and Kelele Takatifu struggle together only to break up on reaching at the top, does that ever scare you guys?
Not a single day. We didn’t start the group, God did. So whatever God starts he sees through its completion.
What keeps you together even when the going gets tougher?
Prayer has been our soul refuge. At times we feel like nothing makes sense but on kneeling before God our hope and strength is restored.
