Zjimie is a female Nairobi based alternative Rnb singer based in Nairobi. She will be performing in this month’s PikNik edition which will take place in Kileleshwa on the 26th of this month.

Your stage name, Zjimie, is quite unique, does it have any inner meaning?

No. That’s actually my official name both on my birth certificate and my ID.

So what genre of music do you do?

I do alternative RnB.

Never heard of that. School me on that.

Alternative Rnb is more edgy. It kind of has a Hip Hop and house feel to it. A few examples who fall under that genre are Jhene Aiko and Tinashe. The regular Rnb has a very old school feel to it. For example Maria Carey, Brandy and Keyshia cole fall under that category.

How many songs have you recorded so far?

No, not yet but soon. I have written songs and did Acapella’s that are available on Varcity’s YouTube channel.

When did you realize you could sing?

Back in high school. I would sing and do small presentations in school but decided to take it seriously in campus.

How did the people around you react when you told them you wanted to try music?

They were positive about it. I owe it to my friends who encouraged me to purse it. I never saw myself as much of a singer while I was growing up, I mean I did sing in the house while doing chores or in the shower but never saw it as a career but my friends saw the potential. From then I decided to take it more serious and fell in love with it in the process.

So is music a career or you doing for the passion?

I would say both.

What are some of the challenges you have faced so far?

Yes. Having to push a dream with limited resources has been quite a challenge but I believe it’s getting better. Another challenge is having only a few people believing in you and supporting you.

How do you overcome these challenges?

I just learnt to stick out looking for helpful ways of putting my work out. I also try and associate with other guys who are in the music community with whom we challenge each other in ways that help us all grow.
