Merit: Giving Back To The Community

Twenty four year old Merit was in Kenya recently for a media tour. Originally from Lagos he is known for hit songs like ‘Nakupenda’ and ‘Jaiye’. I sat down with him to know more about him, his latest projects plus his music and this is what he had to say:
 
Whats your real name and why the name ‘Merit’?
 
Idowu Oluwole Omowunmi.I acquired the name ‘Merit’ in high school which means good.
 

How long have you been singing?

I started singing last year in October.

What do you like so far about Kenya and is this your first time in Kenya?
 
There are lovely people,very welcoming,beautiful women and handsome men,the weather is nice and this is my third time in Kenya.
What did your parents say when you decided to do music?
They were happy and very supportive of my music as well as my siblings.
 

Would you like to tell us more about the ‘Nakupenda’ song which you did with Patoranking?

I did it in West Africa and I was trying to bring out the best of it. The CEO of Good Empire Entertainment organized it for me as I was trying to rule with the language.

 

Which countries have you performed in and which artists have you performed with before?

Uganda, Nigeria, Dubai, America, Atlanta Georgia and Kenya. I have performed with Lil Kesh, Elias of Ginger fame and Patoranking.
 
If it weren’t for music, what would you rather be doing with your time?
 
I would be a veterinary doctor.
 
What do you do in your free time when not in studio or performing?
 
I go to homes,meet the less privileged and I like being with friends in the house.
 
What would you say about the new wave of Nigerian artists coming up?
 
Everybody is doing good in their music.
What inspires your fashion sense?
 
Appearance determines how people address you.
 
What is your favorite Kenyan meal?
Nyama Choma and Ugali.
 
Are you involved in any charity work?
 
I go to Paradise Childrens Home where I sing and give back to the community. I love to give back 20% to the community especially to the kids.I even celebrated my birthday in Kibera last Sunday.
Any last words to your Kenyan Fans?
 
Ill make fans to be happy.Expect more from Merit to make good things happen. Stay true to yourself. Asanteni sana.
