Messi Handed Jail Term For Tax Fraud

Football Legend Lionel Messi is to serve 21 months in prison after tax fraud charges. The Argentina and Barcelona striker and his father were found guilty by a Barcelonian court after a ruling on Wednesday.

Messi was also fined 2 million pounds and his father 1.5m pounds.  Jorge Messi, the footballers father was also given a jail term for defrauding Spain of $4.5m between 2007 and 2009.

It gets worse as father and son also face fines worth millions of euros for using tax havens in Belize and Uruguay to conceal their image earnings rights.

However, the two “gentlemen” have made a “corrective payment” of €5m, an equivalent to the alleged unpaid tax plus interest! This is in addition to the €2m and €1.5m that Lionel and Jorge had paid back in August 2013.

The silver lining is that neither Messi nor his dad will spend time in prison because under the Spanish law, jail terms of less than two years can be served under probation. An appeal to the Spanish Supreme court is also evitable.
