Makerere University will construct a 30-storey presidential library, named after Kenya’s former president Mwai Kibaki.
The building is estimated to cost 50 million US dollars. Of this amount, $40 million is projected for the presidential Library and the remaining 10 million is for the establishment of a Mwai Kibaki endowed chair in Economics. The deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, Prof Barnarbas Nawangwe, said;
“The HE Mwai Kibaki Presidential Library will be the first presidential library built by a former president at his alma mater. It will also be the first library in Africa to have an endowed chair in economics,”
The library and endowment are named after Mwai Kibaki in commeration the fact that he was the first student of Makerere University to get a first class degree in economics.
The announcement was made by the Chancellor of Makerere, Mondo Kagonyera. Kibaki is expected to launch this project on Friday at Makerere University. The University has a number of notable alumni from Julius Nyerere, Ngugi wa Thiong’o and Milton Obote.
The construction will commerce in December.
