Yesterday Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko had his security detail down sized from 26 to 5 following a directive by the government. National Police spokesman Charles Owino confirmed the incident clearing air on whether the governor’s security had just been withdrawn.
According to him, all governors are entitled to only five security officers and the downsizing is going to happen to all governors and VIPs who have been having excess security officers. It is said that cabinet security Fred Matiang’i directed IG Joseph Boinett to rationalize security attached to VIPs for them to serve other Kenyans.
The total number of security officers attached to VIPs as of now is estimated to be around 10,000 officers straining the numbers of officers serving Kenyans.
