Many city residents now have something to smile about after the government through NYS decided to introduce a cheaper transport system. At a flat rate of only Ksh20 per trip, NYS buses are now transporting commuters from Eline, Githurai, Mwiki, Dandora, Kariobangi, Kibra and Kawangware to town and back during peak hours.
This has however been met by resistance from the private operators as they see it as unfair competition knowing that their millions of shillings are at stake. The buses are also likely to face little if at all any tantrums from the traffic police unlike the private sector does.
For a long time the private sector had had no competition sometimes taking advantage of the situation and hiking bus fares anytime an opportunity arose especially during this rainy season.
