Rihanna might not have herpes, but apparently a tube of her signature lipstick carried the sexually transmitted disease. The Barbadian pop star has been rumored to have herpes in the past, but gossip over the singer’s alleged STD gained popularity after a New York woman claimed she got the virus by using the singer’s lipstick, “RiRi Woo,” the New York Daily News reported on Thursday.
In this case, however, the plaintiff claims the virus was spread through the singer’s endorsed brand and not her personal lipstick. Starkeema Greenidge filed a lawsuit and wants to be compensated by the star, 26, for the “mental anguish and emotional distress” apparently caused by Rihanna’s signature rouge, which is apart of a Mac collection.
Greenidge, a 28-year-old waitress from Harlem, attended a Rihanna show at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on May, apparently herpes-free, when she used the supposedly infected makeup. “[She] didn’t use a fresh or new lipstick tube, but rather one that had been used for other patrons,” the lawsuit claimed.
“This is going to happen over and over again if nothing is done,” she told the New York Daily News. “I wasn’t able to work for two weeks. It cost me a lot of money.”
Two days after the concert, Greenidge reportedly felt a bump on her lips, which a doctor diagnosed as oral herpes. The virus could have been prevented, her lawyer contends, and said Mac “should have known” they were “exposing patrons to possible spread of disease.”
Neither the singer nor Mac has publicly commented on the ongoing lawsuit. Rihanna signed a deal with the makeup giant in February to start her own cosmetics line. RiRi Woo, which was reportedly inspired by the singer’s favorite red Mac lipstick, has been promoted at her “Diamonds World Tour.”
Rihanna was recently honored with the Fashion Icon award at the CFDA Fashion Awards at Lincoln Center in New York on Monday. She wore a dress with more than 200,000 Swarovski crystals and not much else.
