Illumination and Universal’s The Secret Life of Pets 2 earned $16.5 million on its first day of domestic release. That is 56% below the last film’s $38.5 million opening days in early July of 2016.
If this were a bigger-budgeted film, and if the first one hadn’t made such a ridiculous amount of money, this would be disconcerting for all parties.
The Secret Life of Pets 2 frankly has nothing “new” to offer to general moviegoers aside from Harrison Ford in his first vocal performance.
Nonetheless, if it legs as the last one did, that’ll be a $47 million opening weekend, a $166 million domestic cume and a $395 million global total. Whether the Patton Oswalt/Kevin Hart/Tiffany Haddish toon was green-lit under the notion that it would get anywhere near the first film’s totals, it was budgeted so that it didn’t remotely have to.
However, The latest X-Men installment is expected to lose more than $100 million USD after it had the worst opening in the Marvel franchise’s history, according to finance experts. Dark Phoenix was meant to be the grand finale to the X-Men franchise as we know it under 20th Century Fox, but instead of going out with a bang, it merely fizzled and further convinced fans that Disney would breathe much needed fresh air into the intellectual property.
