A doctor told Men’s Health recently that anal sex, a sometimes go-to move for people who are looking to avoid pregnancy, can actually get a woman pregnant. Before you run out to buy a home pregnancy test, though, just know that it was a result of a fairly rare medical condition.
When Brian Steixner, M.D., Director of the Institute of Men’s Health at Jersey Urology Group in Atlantic City was still a med student he studied a woman who had what doctors call a “cloaca,” an underdeveloped bladder, vagina, and rectum. Steixner said that doctors screwed up a surgery to correct the woman’s condition when she was younger, which left her uterus connected to her rectum.
Dr. Steixner calls this his “greatest story ever,” so we’ll let him tell it.
Flash forward to several years later, when the woman showed up in Dr. Steixner’s ER–with a baby in her belly. “We knew about her condition, and we had followed her for a decade,” he says. “After doing a whole bunch of X-rays, we determined that she got pregnant from having anal sex. Was she going to have to poop the baby out? I thought that would be hilarious, but ultimately, the OBGYNs couldn’t figure out a way to effectively deliver the baby through the rectum safely. So she had a C-section”
So it’s very unlikely, but apparently still possible to get pregnant through anal sex. Dr. Steixner added.
“They totally lied to us in 9th grade health class,”
