After recently performing with Daft Punk in the Grammy’s, The Weekend decided to drop the video for “Reminder,” a smooth cut from the overstuffed Starboy, on his 27th birthday. The Kid Studio-directed video is more of a standard music video compared to Starboy’s previous art flicks, featuring cameos from industry bigwigs like YG, Asap Rocky, French Montana, Bryson Tiller, Drake and few other stars show up in what’s clearly a flex.
As if to comfort you, or serve as, well, a reminder, ‘Reminder’ feels much more like The Weekend that first grabbed us and is prologued by an eerie, disembodied synth line. It gives way to a moreish little beat and simple but effective vocal. The lyrics reference his surge into the mainstream and ironic Kids Choice Awards nominations for ‘Can’t Feel My Face’, a song about doing a ton of coke:
‘I just won a new award for a kids show / Talking ’bout a face coming off a bag a blow’
He also says: ‘Got that Hannibal, Silence of the Lambo’ but let’s try and pretend he doesn’t.
Featuring Drake on the feature, however, came as a surprise. The two have had an on-again, off-again-relationship that appeared to turn icy after Drake gave the Weekend features on Take Care and then the Weekend instead penned a deal with a major label instead of Drake’s OVO, helping him become almost as famous as Drake. Let’s not forget the fact that The Weekend also insinuated that he was responsible for the bulk of the work on Take Care. All that seems to be a thing of the past now, and hopefully the two will get back to making more good music together.
The Weekend’s new visual follows videos for Starboy’s “Party Monster” and “Starboy.” He also released a short film called Mania.
