Earlier this month, students of the University of Nairobi took to the streets to protest former comrade Babu Owino’s arrest. He’d been accused of hate speech after referring to the President as ‘mtoto wa mbwa’.

This caused anti-riot police to be sent to University Way to calm the students down and get them out of the streets. As a result, numerous students were brutalized and injured by the police most of whom were not even involved in the riots.

The IPOA has since said that they would launch an investigation into the use of excessive force and violence by the members of the police force.

Prior to the burning of the University of Nairobi’s security offices this week, students were heard chanting “Mbithi must go!”

The students of the University are clearly tired of the current Vice Chancellor’s inability to ensure that students of the University are safe from any sort of harm within the compound. The university is supposed to be a place where students feel safe and comfortable not one where anyone can just come and attack them without facing any repercussions.

A hashtag was since introduced to social media, #MbithiMustGo. Some have even compared him to the previous VC, Magoha saying that such a thing would never have happened if he was still the VC. Some said that the police wouldn’t have gone past State House Road in the times of Magoha whereas they managed to go into classrooms and hostels during the latest riots.

Do you agree that Prof. Mbithi should go?
