The election period is a time of uncertainty. Many people are even complaining that everything is being postponed until after elections. The new Kenyan proverb is ‘After elections.’

The same is to be said about universities. The University of Nairobi today released a statement from the Vice Chancellor, Peter Mbithi, saying that the school will remain closed from 4th August to 18th August 2017.

The statement read;

This is to inform all staff that the University of Nairobi will close with effect from August 4, 2017 up to and including August 18, 2017 during the electioneering period. It should, however, be noted that:
i) The Vice-Chancellor’s Office will remain open.
ii) Essential services that normally run during weekends and public holidays will be maintained.
iii) Mail Registry at the Main Campus will remain open from 8.30 a.m. to 12.00 noon.
iv) Out-patient treatment at the University Health Services will be available throughout the above period to cater for emergency cases.
v) Telephone services in all campuses will be operated by a few staff during the period in question.

The closure will allow staff to participate in the election process more conveniently and peacefully.

I wish you well and urge you to maintain peace during this time.
