A study by CPS Research International has indicated that UON is the most highly invested institution when it comes to research. CPS released their findings that indicated UON leads in publications in referrals that made them lead with a 39.7%. According to the research, volume of research in Kenya went hand in hand with the Volume of publication.
UON was followed closely by KU(11.3%),Moi University(10.5%) and JKUAT(8.9%). However, the ranking revealed that most public universities topped in the ranking of institutions that have invested heavily in research as they receive aids from the government, NGO and other donors. In details Ksh 1.53 B was given to the top 10 public universities while top 10 private universities received Ksh 117 M.
The report further revealed that most of the funds that are dedicated to research are mostly provide by the government. The lead researcher Mr Herman Munyora went further to reveal that UON topping the ranking had received a total of Ksh 0.56 B accounting for 17.7% of the funds given to universities from the government. Other institutions with the percentage of the funds they received were; KU 15%,Moi University 9.9%,JKUAT 7.8%,Egerton 4%, Maseno 3.6%.
In the ranking the only private institutions that managed to appear was Strathmore University and Mt. Kenya University. The lead Researcher Mr Munyora urged the government to increase the funding that is given to institutions for the research purposes terming as the current allocation to be very insufficient.
