You won’t believe who joined the ‘chonga viazi’ corner after Laura Oyier, AFC Leopards. I know it’s hard to believe, I also thought it was a joke. Kenyan sports has started taking a bad reputation of late. Athletics, boxing and now football.
Kenyan Premier League giants AFC Leopards were on Wednesday detained at a Mombasa hotel over unpaid bills a day after beating Bandari 2-1.
A contingent of 29 players and officials who were set to depart Mombasa at 7.00 am were shocked when the hotel security told them the bus could not be allowed to leave the facility until a bill amounting to Sh174,340 is cleared.
Jambo Village Hotel manager Eutropia Manga maintained that none of the players would leave until the bill is paid in full. He firmly said that no amount of convincing would let him release the players.
The manager said the team’s chief accountant, who she identified as Martin, had switched off his phone.
Getting this information proved to be hustle as the club’s security personnel attacked Nation journalists, Philip Onyango and Laban Walloga, who went to cover the shameful happening, confiscating their gadgets including the camera and deleted all the photos taken at the scene before giving it back to them.
Some football clubs are bankrupt, the main football federations can’t seem to come to a mutual understanding and now this..?! Do footballers still have a future in this country at this rate? When will football have a transparent and accountable management??
